U-Belt Fabric Expansion Joint Designs: Chemical Attack

FlexCom's custom u-belt style fabric expansion joints are used in applications that require the efficient transfer of high temperature gases at low pressures. Since many of these applications - such as boiler exhaust and pollution control systems - tend to produce gas streams with high levels of particulate and chemical contamination, all of our custom fabric expansion joints are made from ChemShield, our trademark 100% PTFE-based laminated chemical barrier material.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene, commonly known as Teflon) is an extremely versatile thermoplastic with an indefinite shelf life. Its fluorine chemical base and extremely high molecular weight makes it one of the world's most slippery materials. Highly resistant to moisture, PTFE is completely inert to virtually all chemicals and solvents (with the exception of molten alkali metals and gaseous fluorine atmospheres at high temperatures and pressures). In addition, PTFE's extremely low friction coefficient makes it highly resistant to abrasions caused by particulate solids suspended in a high temperature gas stream. All of these features make PTFE an ideal material for a fabric expansion joint.

FlexCom's fabric expansion joint designs all feature ChemShield, a multi-ply barrier material composed of one or more zero porosity PTFE-coated fiberglass layers laminated to a heavy duty fiberglass cloth. This unique blend of highly effective barrier materials provides our fabric expansion joints with a superior combination of protections against both corrosion and thermal stresses.
