Composite Flat Belt Design: Protective Accessories

FlexCom custom expansion joint designs include a wide range of optional features for protecting your composite flat belt expansion joint from damage caused by both environmental stresses and internal operating loads. Carefully selecting the best combination of protective options for your specific industrial gas transfer application can extend the service life of your joint by protecting it from abrasion, temperature and accidental external damage.

  • Covers. Removable and permanent covers (also called shrouds) are designed to protect the exterior surface of your flat belt expansion joint from possible damage caused by mechanical damage or impacts from foreign objects.

  • Accumulation Pillows/Barriers. This optional pillow (also called a bolster, or cavity pillow) rests within the space between the joint's exterior wall and the interior gas seal. An accumulation pillow protects the flexible joint material from particulate intrusion, while also extending the flat belt's life by reducing its overall operating temperature. In addition, a pillow reduces unwanted movement (“flutter”) of the flexible material caused by pressure changes in the gas stream. Our accumulation pillows are fabricated from a high performance insulating material wrapped in stainless steel mesh.

  • Flow Liners/Baffle Plates. An optional internal flow liner (also called a baffle plate) is used to deflect internal airflow away from the flexible joint material. Flow liners are used in flat belt expansion joints designed for applications with high particulate contamination, and can be fabricated from stainless or carbon steel, corton, or AR plate.

  • Retaining Rings/Control Rods. For flat belt composite joints that require an extra level of protection against excessive axial movement, our custom designs may optionally include stainless steel retaining rings and control rods for greater regulation of joint movement.
