Materials, ChemShield and FlexLam
The flexible components of FlexCom fabric expansion joints and composite flat belt expansion joints are made from highly durable PTFE-based thermoplastic composite fabrics. These materials, ChemShield and FlexLam, are extremely versatile and provide our custom expansion joint designs with exceptional resistances to high temperature, chemical attack and particulate abrasion. ChemShield is a 100% PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) thermoplastic film that can optionally be laminated to a PTFE-coated fiberglass cloth for increased temperature and pressure tolerances. ChemShield's PTFE surface is inert to nearly all chemicals and solvents (with the exceptions of molten alkali and gaseous fluorine) and highly resistant to moisture. In addition, the extremely low friction coefficient of PTFE makes ChemShield exceptionally resistant to abrasions caused by particulate solids suspended in the gas stream. Most of our non-metallic expansion joint designs depend on ChemShield, either alone (as in our Chemduit line of flexible ducting) or incorporated into our FlemLam multi-ply laminate fabrics. Learn more about our ChemShield line of PTFE-based laminate chemical barriers. FlexLam is our line of composite thermoplastic fabrics, used in all of our u-belt fabric expansion joint and flat belt composite expansion joint designs. A multi-ply fabric, FlexLam is created by laminating one or more layers of ChemShield film onto a thick woven fiberglass cloth. This addition of a thick high performance substrate gives FlexLam greater tensile strength, temperature resistance and overall durability than offered by ChemShield alone. These features make FlexLam an ideal expansion joint fabric for use in high temperature, low pressure gas transfer environments.
