FlexCom Metal Bellows Designs: Design Elements

To design the best metal bellows for your specific application requirements, FlexCom carefully tailors a wide range of expansion joint design elements in order to achieve the best possible balance of load (heat, pressure and movement) tolerances, vibration dampening and long term joint integrity and reliability.

Some of these elements and design features include:

Joint Type. Different applications require fundamentally different metallic expansion joint designs. FlexCom offers a full selection of quality solutions, including Hinged Universal, Slotted Hinged, Tied Single, Gimbal, Universal and Tied Universal metal bellows designs.

Joint Size. Joint size is an important element in FlexCom expansion joint design. While a smaller joint costs less and may be more appropriate to your application, a larger joint generally offering greater elasticity, compensating better for movement while offering a greater degree of vibration isolation. A custom joint design finds the right balance for your system.

Steel Grades. FlexCom custom metal bellows designs are available using a wide variety of steel grades, different metal types offering different balances of load tolerance, elasticity and cost.

Single vs. Multi-Ply Steel. Switching from a single ply of heavy steel to a multi-convoluted design featuring multiple, thinner steel plys is an effective way to increase joint elasticity without negatively affecting load or movement tolerance. FlexCom offers custom steel joints in either configuration, per customer specifications.

Flanges. Steel flanges are used to mount your FlexCom metal bellows to your application's ductwork. Custom FlexCom metallic expansion joints are designed with flanges customized to match your specific bolt patterns, in either fixed or floating "cage nut" configurations, for easy installation in any existing application.

Tie/Control/Limit Rods. External steel rods can be added to a FlexCom metal bellows to provide additional stability and to limit joint movement to a specific range.

Flow Liner. A steel flow liner is used to protect the internal surface of your FlexCom metal bellows against abrasion and particulate buildup. In addition, a flow liner - made from any of a variety of steel grades - helps to provide a laminar flow.

External Cover. A metal bellows cover, built from stainless or galvanized steel, is used to provide protection against dirt build up and other contaminants and stresses in your FlexCom expansion joint's external environment.
